As the weather gets warmer our drinks usually get cooler. Enjoy this healthy Strawberry Mojito Kombucha Spritzer this summer (or year-round) for an incredibly refreshing low-calorie beverage or mocktail.
Count Your Drinks
As a dietitian people are always asking me what they should/shouldn’t drink. While the answer is almost always “it depends” or “water” I get that sometimes you want more. I also sometimes want something refreshing that is appealing to the taste buds but doesn’t completely negate all of my efforts to eat healthily. So, believe it or not, I get it.
Drinks are usually forgotten about. Anytime I ask a client to recount what they ate in the last 24 hours they almost always forget to tell me what beverages they consumed. I get it, a drink is not nearly as memorable as a meal. You don’t spend all that time cutting it up and chewing it, so it seems like it contributes nothing to your health or lack thereof.
However, drinks do in fact count. Sometimes they are worse than not because they are fast energy that your body metabolizes immediately and then jacks up your blood sugar (unnecessarily so) without adding any health benefits. While, sure, a drink may taste delicious do we really want to blow all of our health efforts on one drink? Probably not.
Make Your Drinks Count
Okay, so if drinks count, let’s make them count. This time of year it’s easier to get dehydrated and we are more likely feeling thirsty. Instead of reaching for a juice, soda or sugary coffee concoction, think about what you are drinking. Make better choices.
I’m not saying don’t ever drink something incredibly delectable, instead find a drink like this Strawberry Mojito Kombucha Spritzer that satisfies your taste buds but also contributes to your health and hydration. Not convinced? I urge you to track your fluid intake for the week and see if you are even close to what you need (a good starting point is 1/2 body weight in ounces) and if what you are drinking has a ton of sugar, calories and/or crap. You might be surprised by your consumption.
My Favorite Low/No Calorie Beverages
I would be remiss to tell you to do better and then not give you any options. Here are a few of my favorite low/no calorie beverages that help to hydrate you and keep you satisfied.
Water. I know, so boring, sorry not sorry. Add a slice of lemon/lime or some mint or cucumber to keep it interesting.
Seltzer Water. Not ready to give up your soda? Switch to seltzer water for the bubbles without the sugar or calories.
Kombucha. Full of probiotics for your gut. Make sure you watch the sugar content, ideally <10g of carbohydrate per serving.
Coffee. Straight up or with some cream. Leave the sugar behind. Unable to drink coffee without sugar? News flash, you don’t really like coffee, you like a vehicle for your sugar.
Unsweetened Tea/Iced Tea. I love tea. I also love Sound Sparkling Tea. Skip the sugar and enjoy the taste of tea. Bonus, you get a dose of healthy antioxidants.
Strawberry Mojito Kombucha Spritzer
Speaking of healthy drink options…I made this drink as a mocktail because after traveling (read: celebrating ALOT) to Austin and having another competition this past weekend, I wanted to hydrate in an enjoyable manner without any alcohol or negative side effects.
I love kombucha. I get it, it’s an acquired taste but the bubbliness and tartness of it are my favorite. Not to mention the fermented tea drink is rich in probiotics which can help garner a healthy gut. After a weekend of shenanigans followed by a weekend of overexertion, it was time for some gut healing magic.
Strawberries are in season so what better flavor to enjoy?! I used GT’s Strawberry kombucha but feel free to use a plain, ginger or flavor of choice!
Pro tip: Looking for a cocktail? Add in a shot of vodka to make this mocktail into a cocktail!
