If you don’t know me or don’t follow me on Instagram then you may not know that I LOVE coffee. It’s one of my favorite parts of every day. Yes, I can go a day without it and no it doesn’t keep me up at night. We have a very mutually beneficial relationship that makes me happy and doesn’t take away from my health. If you’ve never tried coffee before then you should Learn more about coffee at Caffeinated Face because it can be a great addition to your day!
Here’s the thing, coffee has a ton of health benefits that may be great for some people (as is with any health benefit, “some” is the keyword). For others, the jitters, anxiousness and lack of sleep it can cause may not be the best. There are 2 sides to every story and every healthy (or not healthy) food, so while I love coffee I do understand it’s not for everyone. Nonetheless, if you are a bit of a coffee novice who’s unsure whether they like coffee or not, then you might want to buy coffee beans and start featuring coffee in your own diet to see how much you like it.
Furthermore, if you’re truly a coffee connoisseur then you might even be on the lookout for a new coffee machine. My Dutch friend recently recommended this website to me that reviews some of the best koffiemachines on the market. You can take a look too if you’re tempted to get one of your own!
That all being said, HAPPY National Coffee Day! I know every day has some theme but when I caught wind that it was a day dedicated to my favorite beverage, I couldn’t help but chime in. Below I will walk you through the benefits that coffee can have as well as benefits you can get on National Coffee Day, because after all, who doesn’t love free coffee?!
Coffee Lover & Nerd
While the deals of the day are below, I figured I’d start with some simple basics on the health of coffee. I am a dietitian and love nerding out on this stuff, sorry not sorry. I got into coffee because I was going to school for my MBA, doing my Dietetic Internship, working a weekend job of teaching swim lessons and also trying to have a social life. My friend Kelsey introduced me to coffee (and CrossFit actually) and my world has never been the same.
I once remember my friends and I brewed a pot of coffee AT midnight because we had to finish our Executive Summaries due the next day. At the time I didn’t think twice about the caffeine and even slept like a baby. The cool thing with coffee is that thanks to science and genetics we all handle it differently. The way we metabolize coffee may be completely different than our partners, friends, and coworkers. Just goes to show that diet, food, health, and genetics is not black and white. There is no one-size-fits-all model, and coffee is no different.
The one thing you can guarantee I will tell my clients and followers is that if you need sugar in your coffee, chances are you don’t actually like coffee..you like sugar. I encourage you to try having your coffee without sugar and start tasting the goodness that is coffee.
Coffee Health Benefits
Anywho, let’s focus on some positives since it is National Coffee Day and all. There has been some research(source) to show that drinking between 2-3 cups of coffee a day can lower risk of all-cause mortality. That’s pretty amazing if you ask me. This includes death or disease related to: heart disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases. Drink up buttercups.
In an umbrella review (aka looking at all the data available) of research studies, it does appear that “Coffee consumption seems generally safe within usual levels of intake, with summary estimates indicating the largest risk reduction for various health outcomes at three to four cups a day, and more likely to benefit health than harm.” (source). Oh, man 3 to 4 cups a day?! That is crazy and also amazing that drinking that much coffee (that many scoff at) can have positive health effects, win-win.
Let’s raise our favorite mugs to coffee and it’s health benefits, shall we?!
