We’ve all heard that infamous line “everything in moderation” and as a Registered Dietitian besides “small, frequent meals” that is one of our so-called “mantras”. Well guess what, I am not buying it…nor do I sell it!
Why?
Well let me ask you first, if moderation is working so well then why is obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease running rampant in the US? You wouldn’t tell an alcoholic to just drink “everything in moderation” so why would you tell a sugar addict that?
Moderation is defined by Merriam-Webster as “an avoidance of extremes in one’s actions, beliefs, or habits”. Well I don’t know about you but I think eating a Twinkie every once in a while is pretty extreme, even though most people will tell you that it is indeed “in moderation.” I guess it all depends how you look at it.
With such a vague definition to be living by no wonder we are all having to buy bigger pants sizes and order extra plane tickets. It is almost as if we came up with this phrase to make ourselves feel better when in reality we all now feel worse.
Now I cannot advise you on all life decisions, I don’t know if I have enough sass for that. However, I can make recommendations as it comes to your eating habits. It is really simple:
- JUST EAT REAL FOOD
- READ YOUR LABELS
Until next time, stay sassy!
XOXO
Agreed. Also annoying is “eat less, move more”
Yayyyy so glad this up is! Can’t wait to read it on the reg 🙂
you stay sassy! great first blog!!!
AH I HATEEE THIS PHRASE AS WELL!! It literally does not make any sense to me! Fuell your sugar addiction with a moderate amount of sugar? Cause that makes sense!
Its just a cop out, honestly, to give an excuse to those eating sugar & crop oils on the reg. Thanks for spreading the truth, Laura!
