Hooray! We made it to May. It’s been a crazy start to the year but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun in the kitchen, am I right? I know I went through a rough patch there where I didn’t feel like cooking anything, and you know what? That’s okay. It happens to the best of us. When I finally felt like cooking again, I made these Greek Turkey Burgers and suddenly I remembered why I love to cook–because food tastes SO GOOD when you make it yourself.
Homemade Greek Turkey Burgers
Okay, not all food will be the best food you’ve ever had BUT often when we make things at home we can make them taste just as good if not better than when we go out to eat. Sometimes you’ll make mistakes but I promise eventually those will become fewer and far between.
I would eat Greek-inspired food every day if I could so of course when I went to Trader Joe’s the last time I was there, I snagged some Feta. I have been waiting for the right opportunity to use it and this seemed like the perfect combo for some Greek Turkey Burgers.
Regular vs. Turkey Burgers
I love a plain ol’ burger but it really seals the deal for me when there is something added to the actually patty. Often people tell me turkey burgers are too dry and I’ve found that’s because people just cook them like they are regular burgers. When using beef you can rely on the fat to keep it juicy. However, when you are using ground turkey, it is very lean and needs some help, just like these ones.
So, make sure that you give some love to the turkey and add some delicious add ins like:
Egg(s)
Cheese (ahem. Feta makes everything betta)
Greens
Spices
Fats (i.e. cheese, oils, bacon, etc.)
Make a Mean Greek Turkey Burger
I don’t know about you but I am all for the toppings of a burger. When I go out to eat a burger only gets thrown in there IF the toppings are amazing. If it’s just plain ol’ lettuce, tomato & onion, they’ve already lost me.
I love Feta, as you might already have guessed, so I decided the topping had to include it somehow. I’ve done plenty of Tzatziki sauces before so I decided it wast time for something new. Welcome, Whipped Feta.
Whipped feta is delicious on it’s own but it goes so well with this burger. It melts in your mouth and is just downright AMAZING. I used Greek Yogurt to help add some protein & flavor but you can also use cream cheese if you have that on hand instead.
As for the relish, I wasn’t sure what to call what I made, is it a relish? a salsa? Whatever it is it brings a lightness to the burger and seals the deal for me. If you have tomatoes throw them in there but since I wasn’t making an extra trip to the grocery store (hello, 2020 problems) I decided to just use what I had on hand.
Get Prepared to love these Greek Turkey Burgers
These Greek Turkey Burgers are amazing by themselves if you don’t have time to make the garnishes (whipped feta & red pepper relish), you can just eat them on their own and add some toppings of choice, I won’t be {too} offended.
I hope you enjoy these and remember to make sure you cook the turkey burger all the way through for food safety reasons 🙂
Pro Tip: Make these ahead of time and reheat time of to have a delicious lunch or dinner option for the week. Why not double or triple it!
In a blender or food processor, put all ingredients for whipped feta in and blend until smooth. Place in a small bowl, cover and place in refrigerator until ready to serve.
Red Pepper Relish
Place all ingredients in a small bowl, cover and place in refrigerator until ready to serve.
Greek Turkey Burgers
Preheat grill to medium high heat & spray with cooking oil spray.
While the grill is preheating, add all ingredients (except buns) to a food processor or blender and pulse until mixed (do not over mix!). Alternatively you can chop all ingredients and mix burgers by hand.
Form turkey mixture into 4 large patties, flatten and place on plate.
Grill on each side for about 8 minutes or until cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F.
Toast burger buns on grill as desired, then optionally spread 1 Tablespoon of the hummus on each of the burger buns. Add burger patty and top with whipped feta & red pepper relish, enjoy!
