Unless you’ve been living under a rock then you know the latest obsession with avocado toast. Not mine, but the world’s. It’s literally the next best thing since sliced bread. Want in on a secret? I’ve been digging the craze myself, I just don’t always post about it. So, this time around I figured I’d share with you my latest avocado toast obsession, this one is called Gluten-Free Black Bean Avocado Toast. Add this to your daily breakfast, brunch, or heck snack list and upgrade your Avocado Toast obsession.
So, just like any good trend or fad, it’s been around a time or two. This is one of those fads that I’m okay made it’s way to Instagram. Why? Because avocados have a lot of health benefits. Avocados themselves seem to be loved or hated there has been no in between, until avocado toast.
The great thing about avocado toast is that most people love toast so getting them to add avocado wasn’t all that of a big deal. Avocados have about as much potassium (if not more) than a banana, and fill you up for far longer because it is rich in healthy mono-unsaturated fats. Aka good for your heart health, just believe me on that one.
Little Northern Bakehouse
Okay, so while I guess I could do a whole post on avocado toast, let’s get to the real reason this recipe came to be. Little Northern Bakehouse reached out and asked if I would try their bread. Well, the good news is that I had already tried their bread at Expo East so I was ahead of the game here.
The only real problem is that the only store that offers the bread near me is The Fresh Market, which isn’t all that close. So, I made a special trip, because I love grocery shopping. Find where to buy the bread near you here. It was worth the trip because I made this delicious gluten-free black bean avocado toast so I’m pretty pleased with myself.
Healthy Gluten-Free Bread
You guys know I’m not afraid of carbs, you know bread, pasta, rice, etc. I’m a fairly active individual as are my clients so I’m always looking for good sources of carbs. Not to mention, I know many people who prefer or need gluten-free options. So I’m always on the look out for you and will try almost anything to see if it’s good. This bread is found in the freezer section, is very light & airy, and also big on flavor with all the seeds on the inside & out.
I knew Little Northern Bakehouse bread tasted good, but what I didn’t know was that they also pride themselves in being made from 100% gluten-free, non-GMO, & whole food ingredients. On top of that they are certified as Glyphosate Residue Free which means that they are tested by a third party to ensure they have no Glyphosate Residue which is a known probable carcinogen deemed so by the World Health Organization.
It’s nice to know that there are companies out there willing to offer us healthier & sustainable options for our health and for the health of others.
Gluten-Free Black Bean Avocado Toast
Alrighty, let’s get to the main reason you’re here, the recipe. I didn’t want to just give you a plain ol’ avocado toast recipe so I decided to spruce it up, as per usual. I am always looking for ways to get my plant-based clients more protein, and this might be a great option for them (and anyone really).
The black beans & well as the hemp hearts on top of the gluten-free 7 seed bread make for a filling combo loaded with protein & fiber to fuel your day. Not to mention, it packs a nice southwest inspired taste to give your tastebuds something to crave. I highly recommend topping it with some sriracha if you enjoy a spicy meal like me! If not, you could always add some mild salsa to get the tomato taste with out the heat. Not plant-based? Add an egg & some cheese to make this dish pack eve more punch!
Pro Tip: Make the black bean mash ahead of time and spread it on your toast at time of consumption!
In a saucepan over heat or a bowl over no heat, mash black beans, lime juice, sriracha, salt & pepper with the back of a fork or potato masher. (Heat can help speed up the process but not necessary!)
Meanwhile, toast bread to desired doneness
Top bread with black beans, then avocado, hemp hearts, & tomatoes, enjoy!
Notes
I used Little Norther Bakehouse Gluten-Free bread in this recipe.
Enjoy this toast any time of day but it would make a great addition to your breakfast or brunch! Top it with your favorite toppings, feel free to get creative.

I love Little Northern Bakehouse bread. And their cinnamon raisin is good as well. You can buy the one you used above at Costco as well, which makes it very accessible to people, and is such a great choice for those who are gluten free.
