I often get asked how to eat healthy in the summer especially when so much is going on. Do you just put your life on hold and wait until things settle down? Or, better yet do you incorporate the summer into your healthy lifestyle? Let’s figure out how to do the latter.
With summer right around the corner (when did that happen?) I wanted to talk about how to manage to eat healthy this summer. Many people want to focus on what they look like in a bathing suit. Frankly, I can’t stand that approach to health.
You look beautiful in a bathing suit just the way you are. And if you don’t feel that way, get a new bathing suit and new perspective on yourself.
That being said, it doesn’t mean you should not focus on being healthy this summer. There will be all kinds of temptations and chances to overindulge. While that’s okay once in a while, it should not consume your whole summer. Instead your summer should work to fit into your healthy lifestyle and vice versa.
I don’t stop worrying about my health just because I’m on vacation, instead I make it a part of my vacation and my vacation part of my health. I’ve put together my 5 tips that help me and my clients achieve health over the busy summer months.
My Top 5 Tips on How To Eat Healthy This Summer
Here are my 5 tips on how to eat healthy this summer. At the very least remember that we are always striving for progress not perfection. Ain’t nobody got time for perfection! You can have your cake (errrr ice cream?) and eat it to this summer, just be smart, okay?!
- Remember You have Food at Home!
How many times have you gone out to eat even though you just bought groceries? I am guilty of this too. So many times it’s easier to just go out to eat. It may be easier for prep and time, but for waistline and your wallet it may not be the smartest idea.
Remind yourself often that you have food at home and while it may take you 1/2 hour to prepare, it’s also another 1/2 hour you don’t have to worry about finances or your waistline, you’re welcome.
Pro tip: set a limit on how many times you can go out in one week or month, it makes it that much more fun AND saves you money (and calories)
- Make veggies you actually want to eat.
So many people know they need to eat more veggies yet I find that there is this sticking point between knowing you need to eat them and wanting to actually eat them.
Listen, I don’t eat microwaved frozen veggies unless I have nothing left in the house. So, how do you eat veggies you enjoy? Experiment AND learn to cook them properly.
Pro tip: I love using www.thekitchn.com, Pinterest or YouTube to learn how to cook veggies. If all else fails, add bacon 😀
- Plan your indulgences.
You know ahead of time for the most part what events and trips you are going on this summer. Plan ahead! For instance, me and my friends are heading to Austin, TX in 10 days and I’m planning my indulgences now!
In the meantime, I am planning on healthy meals at home. You are allowed to enjoy your food and your life, but if you care about your health, don’t make every day an indulgent one. Mark down those dates and make your other days a normal routine.
Pro tip: If you know an event is going to be crazy indulgent, offer to bring a dish, eat before you go and/or make sure to drink plenty of water!
- Eat your indulgences outside of the house.
So you want ice cream, I get it, so do I. However, you find that when you bring the entire pint of Ben & Jerry’s into the house you HAVE to eat it all. I also get that. So, here’s the solution, have ice cream but don’t bring it home.
Make it an event to go get ice cream (*insert any other treat here*) and leave it where you found it.
There is no need to add temptations in to your sanctuary that is your home. Instead go enjoy the experience. The good news is that you won’t eat nearly as much and you’ll have a memory (instead of you and your pint of ice cream on the couch watching Netflix…)
Pro tip: have healthier options for snacks/desserts at home so you’re not tempted to go out every night. I have a new sorbet recipe coming soon!
- Get outside and MOVE!
For the love of all things summer please get outside and move your body. Make it part of your lunch break, after school activity or morning routine. Take any opportunity to get outside and breathe some fresh air, sunshine and gain some steps. Summer isn’t all about the BBQs but is also about the sunshine, pools, beaches and sun tans. Not to mention if you get moving, those indulgences won’t wreck quite as much havoc.
Pro tip: grab a work buddy, neighbor or significant other and have a daily walking/getting outside date!
Summer Time & The Eating is Easy
Alright, so you have a fun summer planned, now let’s make sure that fun keeps you healthy as well, what do you say? I plan on going to Austin and eating some healthy, some indulgent but also sleeping more than usual and having fun outside moving my body and of course laughing with my best friends.
I surround myself with others who love feeling healthy and fit so it makes my cause easier when I want a salad every now and then. If you start your day/week/summer off on the right foot, you’ll set yourself up for success….okay and look pretty excellent in that bathing suit…
