Happy Thursday y’all! And welcome to October. Don’t let the cold weather get you down. Maybe you just need some micronutrients (ahem, vitamins, minerals, etc.) so check out yesterday’s podcast for more. As a dietitian I get asked many questions and most the time it has to do with “what do you think I should eat…” and this week I noticed a theme.
This week i’ve been facing the roadblock with people that they feel they must eat conventional meals. What does that mean you ask? Most people think breakfast MUST be breakfast food and lunch must be lunch food…you get the gist. I used to be in the same boat. However, there are NO rules as far as what “types” of food you can eat depending on what time the clock says.
Whoa, whoa back up I did not say you could eat ICE CREAM for breakfast, so hold on for one more second.
Let me see a show of hands (yes, raise your hand) for those of you that eat vegetables daily. Awesome. Now keep them up if you eat them with breakfast. My guess is a lot of you shot your hand down. Why? Probably because most food companies and ad campaigns want you to eat breakfast bars, and cereals and sausage links to start your day or GASP a sugar-laden coffee-like drink. Never do you see vegetables and fruit as the star of a breakfast ad campaign.
Let’s stop thinking about breakfast as cereal and lunch as a sandwich and dinner as steak and potatoes and let’s just start thinking about meals as food, and snacks as food.
When you pick something to eat whether for a snack or a meal, think of it as food. If it is something you’d be proud to tell me about or that your great-grandmother would recognize, great, have it on your plate. Yes, that means you can have sardines for breakfast, a 3-egg veggie omelette for lunch and a big salad for dinner. Mix it up and just eat real food for every meal or snack, no rules. Own it.
Have a great Thursday, here’s a throwback for you all, just keep swimming…
